Honey and Sriracha Glazed Chicken Wings

Honey and sriracha chicken wings with a yummy sweet & spicy glaze, with instructions for cooking in an Air Fryer, on the BBQ & in an oven.

These delicious finger-licking wings take around 30 minutes to cook in an air fryer or on the BBQ, and around an hour in the oven.

Sweet and Spicy Chicken Wings

I adore cooking and eating wings, my site is littered with everything from crispy fried buttermilk wings to sticky wings with a host of global influences.

I have everything from Korean-influenced gochujang chicken wings, to Thai-influenced sweet chilli sauce chicken wings and North African-influenced harissa chicken wings.

These honey and sriracha chicken wings have no “spiritual” home (outside my heart). The sriracha sauce is a Thai staple but the rest of the flavourings are very western in their origins.

They are delicious and use a technique that I have honed over many years.

You get options too, I have provided instructions for an air fryer, oven and even the BBQ (or grill), so you have no excuses!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to oven-bake, BBQ or air fry these wings?

Better is an odd concept, if I am judging on flavour then I prefer to cook them on the BBQ. That smokey vibe is glorious!

However, cooking on the BBQ is not a viable choice for some times of the year and indeed for some people. I usually cook them in the air fryer, unless I am serving them with French fries and then I cook them in the oven.

Practicality usually wins when I am cooking!

Can I use a different hot sauce?

Yes, although you want something with a similar “body” to sriracha sauce. Avoid thin hot sauces because you will not get the right “cling” in the glaze.

Do I have to let the dry rub sit on the wings?

No, but they are better if you do. The salt in the dry rub helps to dry and flavour the skin which leads to much better wings in my opinion.

Can I cook these in advance?

Yes, I have a “thing” for cold wings and love sneaking the odd one out of the fridge to munch on! They are fine for a couple of days after cooking if stored correctly.

They can be reheated in the oven or the air fryer, at a moderate (170°C or 340°F). The skin does become a little “flabby” when they are reheated.

Can I put this glaze on other types of chicken?

Yes, you can use it on any other cut of chicken, my favourite would be chicken drumsticks. For timings, please see my sticky chicken drumsticks recipe.

Serving Suggestions

I’ve served these sriracha glazed chicken wings with some fries, and loads of napkins, these spicy fellas are sticky!

I usually cook my french fries in an air fryer, you could equally cook my air fryer chips or air fryer wedges. The air fryer sides are particularly good if you are cooking the wings on the BBQ!

If you are cooking these wings in an air fryer, then frying some crispy straw potatoes or my crispy fried new potatoes would be a better option.

I love a side of pickles with spicy wings, a jar of what you fancy would be just fine. Or you could make something like my quick pickled cucumber or quick pickled daikon.

Finally, I add a little lightly dressed green salad on the side and get stuck in!

Honey and Sriracha Glazed Chicken Wings Recipe

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Marinade Time: 8 hours
Total Time: 8 hours 40 minutes

These sweet and spicy sriracha sauce and honey-glazed chicken wings are gloriously simple to make and I give instructions for cooking them in an air fryer, on the BBQ or to have them oven-baked.

Ingredients

  • 10-12 (900g) Prepared Chicken Wings
  • 1 Tbsp Sweet Paprika
  • ½ Tbsp Dried Oregano
  • ½ Tsp Cayenne Pepper
  • ½ Tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • ½ Tsp Black Pepper
  • 65g (4-5 Tbsp) Sriracha Sauce
  • 75g (¼ Cup) Honey

Instructions

  1. Prepare your drumsticks by cutting them into drumettes and winglets. You do not need the tips, but freeze them up and use them to make stock.
  2. Sprinkle all of the dry ingredients over the chicken wings, toss to coat and leave them to marinate. The longer the better, I try and let them sit for 24 hours.

How to Cook in an Air Fryer

  1. Place the marinated chicken wings in the basket of an air fryer and cook at 130ºC or 250ºF for 20 minutes. Give them a shake after 10 minutes.
  2. Just before the wings have had 20 minutes whisk together the honey and sriracha sauce in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Transfer the wings to the glaze, stir and toss to give them a nice coating, then return them to the air fryer and cook at 200ºC or 390ºF for 8-10 minutes shaking half way through the cooking time.

How to Oven Bake

  1. Place the chicken wings on a baking rack over a baking tray (lining the tray with foil helps with cleaning later), and bake at 130ºC or 250ºF for 30 minutes.
  2. Remove the wings and flip them over on the backing rack, turn the oven up to 200°C or 400°F and cook for a further 20 minutes.
  3. Just before the wings are ready whisk together the sriracha and honey in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Remove the wings and add them to the glaze, toss them to coat in the sauce, then return to the baking rack and drop them in the oven for a final 10 minutes.

How to Cook on a Grill or BBQ

  1. Set up your BBQ with direct and indirect heat sections. You want to preheat the BBQ to around 250ºC or 485ºF.
  2. Place the wings over the indirect heat section, close the lid and cook for 25-30 minutes. You want the internal temperature of the wings to reach 65-70°C or 150-160°F.
  3. Just before the wings are ready whisk together the sriracha and honey in a large mixing bowl
  4. Remove the wings, add them to the bowl with the glaze and toss them to coat in the sauce.
  5. Return the wings to the direct heat section of the heat and cook to get a nice glaze. This will take 1-2 minutes on each side. Be sure to check that the chicken has reached 73°C or 165°F before serving.

Notes

The timing for this recipe relates to cooking them in an Air Fryer, cooking them in the oven takes around double the time and they are a little quicker on a BBQ.
