Honey and miso glazed tofu with soy sauce, garlic and ginger is a gloriously quick and easy vegetarian recipe that cooks under a hot grill.
When I say quick, this recipe takes no more than 10 minutes to prepare, it also cooks in less than 10 minutes.
Grilled Glazed Tofu
There was a time when I was very rude about tofu, but over the years I have developed a great deal of love for this often maligned ingredient.
Whilst it does not possess a great deal of flavour, it does have a wonderful texture. It also takes big flavours really very well.
I think it is a wonderfully versatile ingredient, I have dishes as diverse as crispy Vietnamese fried tofu with tomato sauce and a fantastic tofu pasta to tofu massaman curry, tofu Thai green curry and a glorious Korean-influenced tofu stew.
My latest offering leans (lightly) on Japanese influences. White miso, honey, soy and sesame oil form a wonderful glaze that gets an addition of garlic and ginger.
It’s wonderfully easy to cook too, rather than being pan-fried it gets slid under a fiercely hot grill (broiler) for a few minutes on each side.
It’s cheap, delicious, quick and easy, it pretty much ticks every box!
Frequently Asked Questions
What sort of tofu do you use?
This recipe needs extra firm tofu and my go-to brand at the moment is Tofoo.
Can I use red or brown miso paste?
Yes, however red and brown miso are much more pokey in terms of flavour and I prefer to use it in braises and soups like my miso noodle soup. I would reduce the amount used by at least half.
Do I have to use both types of soy sauce?
No, the dark soy sauce in this recipe mainly exists to add colour and it is not a dominant flavour.
Can I make this Vegan?
Yes, the only thing in this recipe that is not vegan is the honey.
However, you could swap it out for golden syrup, agave syrup or even maple syrup and still have a tasty dish.
Can I cook this on the hob/stovetop?
Yes, searing this in a griddle pan or even a frying pan for a couple of minutes on each side. I would use a nonstick pan and you will need to be careful when you flip the tofu.
Serving Suggestions
I’ve served this miso-glazed tofu with my egg fried rice recipe in these pictures. But if you wanted to shift this to a vegan dish, then this vegetable fried rice would be a great option.
Noodles are also a great accompaniment to this recipe.
My mushroom yaki udon recipe would be awesome alongside this, as would my sweet chilli noodles or even my sweet and sour noodle stir fry.
A bit of sharpness makes a great contrast to the sweet and umami flavours in the tofu, and my pickled daikon would be the perfect choice.
